What do the effects of alcohol on your brain look like?  Different regions of the brain scans in the figure are labeled with different colors. In this image, pink and red are of special interest, as these hues correspond to the orbitofrontal (pink) and motor regions (red) of the brain. The orbitofrontal area is involved in decision-making, and the motor region is responsible for the planning, control, and execution of voluntary motor functions. Looking from left to right, you can visibly note the lessening brain activity occurring as the study continued and the subject ingested more alcohol. When the researchers upped the blood alcohol level of their test subjects — first from 0.0% to 0.04%, and later from 0.04% to 0.08% — it was within these two brain circuits that they observed the greatest overall disruption in activation.
